Here is a sample of institutions and their current collecting activity; stay tuned for a full updated guide which we hope to publish shortly!

(1) National Library of Ireland:

  • websites, Twitter, YouTube
  • published and paper-based ephemera (such as leaflets)
  • all Irish newspapers (eg media coverage is included in their collection); journals; books, etc (they collect a copy of everything published in Ireland)

The NLI has moved fast to archive more than 100 websites related to the 8th, as well as YouTube and other media – more on their web archiving here. They also work with the public library system, which often collects items of local interest. If you have material you think the NLI would be interested in, or need advice, feel free to contact them at collections@nli.ie.

From tweets by Director Sandra Collins: ‘We are also working on collecting other born-digital materials such as digital photos & other forms of social media. Because our collections are permanent (kept forever) this can be challenging to figure out how best to preserve fragile digital materials’; ‘We generally work with organisations who want to donate their Archives, we don’t generally collect oral histories or individual donations. We collect all we can and our collections are permanent. People consult/view our collections in our Reading Rooms or online or in exhibitions.’
